Whorl is a chameleon with a tail that curls into the roundest, smoothest spiral you ever saw. When Whorl wants to show a curve, Whorl just lifts that tail: round and round it goes, smooth as smooth, not a single sharp corner. "A curve doesn't turn sharp," says Whorl. "It rolls — round and easy."
Whorl's friend Bo the bumblebee is trying to make an "o." But Bo's o keeps coming out pointy, like a little kite, with hard corners poking out. "It won't go round," Bo buzzes, frustrated. "It keeps getting corners."
"Corners come from stopping," says Whorl gently. "When you stop and turn, you make a point. But a curve never stops — it keeps rolling, all the way around. Watch my tail: round... and round... and back to the start, smooooth. Try it like you're rolling a little ball around a bowl. Nice and easy. Don't stop to turn — just keep going round."
Bo tries. Round... and round... keeping it rolling, no stopping... all the way back to the start. And there it is — a smooth, round "o," no corners at all! Bo gasps. "It's round!" Bo makes a "c" next, an open little roundabout, and then a curly "s," rolling one way then the other.
Bo fills the whole flower petal with round, smooth shapes — o's and c's and curly s's, every one soft and easy. A calm, satisfied feeling settles over Bo, smooth as the curves themselves. Whorl curls up beside Bo, tail in a happy spiral, and together they watch the little round letters gleam in the afternoon sun.
