01 Opening

Squiggle is a little snail, and everywhere Squiggle goes, a soft shiny trail follows behind. Slow and steady, up and around, the trail curls across the leaf. When Squiggle looks back, the trail has made a shape. "Oh!" says Squiggle. "That looks like a letter!" Squiggle did not trace it. Squiggle made it — one slow path, all the way through.

At the pond, Squiggle's friend Dot the frog is trying to make an "S." Dot pokes the mud, then jumps away, then pokes again. Little broken bits sit in the mud, but no S. Dot's shoulders droop. "I can't," Dot says quietly. Squiggle slides up close. "You don't stamp it in bits," says Squiggle. "You make it in one long go. Watch my trail."

03 Squiggle

Squiggle starts at the top. Slow. Curve to this side... then swoop to that side... all the way down. One smooth path, no stopping. A big shiny "S" shines in the mud. "It's one line," Squiggle says. "Your hand goes for a little walk, and the walk is the letter." Dot leans in and watches the whole path, top to bottom.

Dot tries. Top... curve... swoop... down. Dot's S is wobbly. One part is fat and one part is thin, and it leans a little to the left. Dot stops and stares at it. But Squiggle is beaming. "You made it! All in one go — that's your S." Dot looks again. It is wobbly. But Dot made every bit of it, start to finish.

05 Closing
Squiggle beat 5 of 5

Dot makes another, and another. Each one is a little steadier than the last. They are still Dot's own wobbly, wonderful S's — not stamped, not traced, but made. Dot sits back in the warm mud and grins, and something proud and quiet glows right in the middle of Dot's chest. "I made that," Dot whispers. Beside the pond, two shiny trails curl side by side, and Squiggle feels it too — the warm, happy hush of making something that is truly yours.
