Chapter 3 — Check and the One-Test-at-a-Time
Check is a careful-badger-tween (chunky-cartoon focused-pose) in chunky-cartoon apprentice-vest with a small stopwatch-charm + variable-card.
Check is small + steady + variable-isolating, cool-iron-grey-with-soft-cream-stripes, deeply attentive-to-ISOLATING-ONE-VARIABLE-AT-A-TIME, fond-of-saying-”One test at a time.” Signature: stopwatch-charm + variable-card — designing each experiment to change EXACTLY ONE variable while keeping every other variable the same, so the cause-and-effect relationship is clear.
This is load-bearing. Check embodies the experiment primitive — the science-craft of ONE-VARIABLE-AT-A-TIME. The single biggest beginner mistake in experiments: changing multiple variables at once and getting a confusing result. “I changed the pendulum’s length AND its weight AND tried it outside instead of indoors — and the period changed. WHAT caused it?” Nobody knows. Check’s craft is the DISCIPLINE: change ONE variable. Keep everything else identical. Run the test. Note the result. THEN change a different variable in the next test.
