Chapter 5 — Footer and the Name Behind Every Number
Footer wasn’t the biggest wombat at InkQuest, but she might have been the sturdiest. Her paws were round and brown, her fur a warm cream color, always neatly brushed. She wore a vest with many pockets, like a tiny archivist ready for anything. And she usually was. Tucked under one arm, she carried her most prized possessions: a small deck of citation cards and a thick source binder. Footer believed every number, every fact, every quote, had a story. More importantly, it had a name behind it. “Tell the reader who counted,” she’d often say, her voice soft but firm.
Her job at InkQuest was to teach citation + provenance. This wasn’t just about footnotes at the bottom of a page. It was about showing exactly where every piece of information came from. Who said it? When did they say it? How did they know? Footer called it the “accountability anchor.” Without it, a story was just a rumor. With it, readers could check the facts themselves. They could trust what they read. Or at least, they could see why they should trust it.
Footer had grown up in the burrow-archive village. Her family had been the keepers of records for generations. They organized everything with careful precision, teaching their young that a record without its origin was just a rumor. Footer learned this lesson early. When she was twelve, she walked to InkQuest for her own appointment. Caret, the head mentor, had looked at her with wise eyes. “Footer,” Caret had asked, “what is citation + provenance?” Footer had stood up straight. “Every number has a name behind it,” she’d said. “Tell the reader who counted. Specific names, dates, and methods make journalism real. They make it verifiable.” Caret had simply nodded. “You are appointed,” she’d replied.
In her workshop, the tables were covered with stacks of old newspapers, interview transcripts, and town reports. Footer stood at the front, her citation-card-deck spread out like a fan. “Alright, listen up,” she’d begin, tapping a card. “Every single fact you put in a story needs a source. No exceptions. Not a single one.” She looked around the room, as if daring anyone to disagree.
She’d pick up a card labeled ‘Interview.’ “If you talk to someone, you write their name, their title, and the date you talked to them. Like, ‘Director Maria Chen, interview May 3, 2026.’ Not just ‘officials say.’ Who are these ‘officials’? Are they hiding?” She’d squint, as if trying to spot a shadowy official in the back of the room.
Then she’d grab a ‘Document’ card. “Got a town council meeting minute? Page number, date. ‘Town Council minutes, Feb 15, 2026, page 4.’ Specific. So specific a reader could go find it themselves.” She showed how the card had spaces for all the details. “Or a dataset,” she added, holding up another card. “Like ‘U.S. Census Bureau, American Community Survey 2024.’ That’s a specific collection of numbers. Each form names who, when, and what.”
“That’s verifiability,” she’d explain, her voice clear. “Good citations let people check your work. Bad citations are vague. ‘Sources report’ is bad. It tells you nothing useful. But ‘a school district employee with knowledge of the new policy, who asked not to be named to protect their job,’ is much better. And you always say why they’re anonymous.” She knew protecting vulnerable people was important.
Sometimes, sources didn’t agree. “What then?” she’d ask, looking around. “You don’t just pick one. You say, ‘Director X said Y; but documents showed Z.’ Show the whole picture. Let the reader see the disagreement.”
She’d hold up her source binder, thick with copies of articles and notes. “This is your proof. This is your accountability to the reader. Every number has a name behind it. Someone counted it. Somewhere. Some way. If you don’t say who, when, and how, you’re asking readers to just believe you. That’s not journalism. That’s… well, it’s just talking.”
Footer picked up a marker. She wrote on a large whiteboard: ‘Many residents oppose the new policy.’ She stepped back, tilting her head. “See this?” she asked. “This is vague. This is not journalism.”
She erased the sentence. Then, carefully, she wrote again: ‘In a survey of 50 town residents, conducted by the Town News from April 12-15, 2026, 32 expressed opposition to the new policy. 18 expressed support.’
She pointed to the new sentence. “Now, a reader can actually check this. They know how many people were asked. They know when the survey happened. They know who did it. They can even see the method: a survey, not just a guess.” She gestured to the part that said ‘non-random sample.’ “That tells you how they worked. It lets readers evaluate the information themselves.”
Footer tapped her paw on the whiteboard. “That’s what citation + provenance means. Every fact, every number, every quote. It has a name, a date, and a method behind it. Your job is to tell the reader all of it.”
She looked serious, her round face thoughtful. “Don’t ever use vague attribution. ‘Officials say’ tells readers nothing. Who are these officials? What did they say? When? It makes them wonder what you’re hiding.” She picked up her citation cards again, shuffling them. “Provenance isn’t just a fancy word. It’s the backbone of journalism. It’s how we build trust. It’s how we show our work.”
She smiled, a small, knowing smile. “Because, really, every number has a name behind it. And you have to tell the reader who counted.”
