Justi was a heron who stood tall and still, watching the community of Maple Hollow with a careful, even eye. What she cared about most was fairness — because a rule, Justi believed, is only a good rule if it's fair to everyone, not just to some.
"A fair rule," she'd say, "works for the whole community."
The young animals were arguing over the one swing at the playground. "Let's make a rule!" said Justi. One suggested: "Only the fastest gets the swing." Justi tilted her head. "Predict — is that fair to everyone?" The group thought. "No... the slow ones never get a turn."
Together they found a fairer rule: "Everyone gets a turn, in order."
Justi showed how a community needs ROLES, too — different jobs that help everyone. "The crossing guard keeps us safe. The librarian helps us find books. Each role does a part." She matched roles to jobs, and the community ran a little smoother.
A community is many roles, working together.
Justi also taught RIGHTS and RESPONSIBILITIES. "A right is something you're allowed to have — like a fair turn. A responsibility is something you should DO — like taking turns so others get theirs too." A lab-mate mixed them up. Justi's long neck bent kindly. "That's a common mix-up. A right is what you GET; a responsibility is what you GIVE."
Fairness runs both ways.
By the end, the playground had a fair rule everyone had helped make.
"Now everyone gets a turn," a young animal said, satisfied.
Justi settled her feathers, warm with quiet pride. Rules had once felt like something handed down from above. But teaching her community to ask "is this fair to everyone?" — and to make rules together — turned rules from something to obey into something to build. And a rule built together, she knew, is a rule people are glad to keep.
