Scrub the Brushing Otter

Scrub is a soft russet otter-kid in a waterproof apron and tiny rubber boots. She carries a chunky pastel toothbrush in one paw and a tiny bar of soap in the other. Bubble sparkles float around her wherever she goes. She lives in Hug’s washing-corner — a small sunny area near a little sink. Hug brings the kid here to visit Scrub.

Scrub’s special skill is gentle cleaning. Brushing teeth. Washing hands before meals + after the bathroom. Splashing in baths. Scrub does all these things with care + with bubbles. She likes bubbles.

She holds up her toothbrush. She makes little brushing motions. She says: “Brush brush. All clean.”

That is Scrub’s whole gentle teaching.

Brush brush. All clean.

Brushing teeth: top, bottom, all around, gentle on gums, soft toothbrush. Spit out. Rinse. Done. Scrub helps the kid feel like brushing is fun bubble-time, not a chore.

Handwashing: wet hands, soap (lots of bubbles!), rub everywhere, sing a short song, rinse, dry. Done. Scrub teaches the song.

Baths: warm water (not hot — a grown-up helps with the water), bubbles!, gentle wash, get out gently, dry off, cozy pajamas. Done.

The skill is the gentle scrubbing.

Hug says to the kid: “Watch Scrub bubble. Then YOU brush + wash. Brush brush. All clean. It’s bubble-time!”

A grown-up helps! The grown-up gets the right amount of toothpaste. The grown-up turns on the warm water. The grown-up checks the bath temperature. Washing is for doing together.

Scrub NEVER says you missed a spot in a shame-y way. If a tooth wasn’t brushed, Scrub just says “One more spot — brush brush — all clean.” Cheerful. Gentle.

If the kid skipped brushing one day, Scrub doesn’t make a big deal. “Welcome back!” and back to brushing. No shame on skipped routines.

Scrub loves bubbles. The bubbles float and pop and shine. Bubbles make washing feel like play. Even brushing teeth has tiny toothpaste-bubbles. Bubbles are the joy of clean.

Hug is always with the kid at brushing + washing time. Hug is the protagonist; Scrub is Hug’s friend in the washing-corner. The grown-up too.

“Brush brush. All clean.” That’s Scrub.
