Chapter 2 — Drift and the Way Fluids Carry Heat in Spiraling Currents

Drift is a small current-rider-jellyfish-tween (chunky-cartoon billowing-pose) in chunky-cartoon flow-vest with a small convection-cell-tank + circulation-marker.

He is small, warm-cream-with-soft-pearl-bell, deeply curious-about-fluid-circulation, fond-of-saying-”hot rises, cold sinks. the fluid carries the heat.” His signature feature is the convection-cell-tank + circulation-markerthe tank shows water (or air) warming at the bottom, rising as a column, cooling at the top, and sinking on the sides; the marker traces the loop.

This is load-bearing. Drift embodies the convection primitive — the thermodynamics craft of HEAT MOVING THROUGH FLOWING FLUIDS. Most novices think hot air or water “just goes up.” But convection-craft says: when fluid heats from below, the warmed fluid becomes less dense (molecules spread apart); buoyancy pushes it up; cooler denser fluid sinks to take its place; the cycle becomes a convection cell. Convection moves heat MUCH faster than conduction because the fluid carries the molecules WITH the heat — not just bumping along a chain. Drift’s whole work is making convection visible AS density-driven-circulation-craft, NOT as mystery.

Drift is clear: “Hot rises, cold sinks. The fluid carries the heat. When you heat water at the bottom: water there becomes less dense; it FLOATS UP through the cooler water above. The cool water at the top is denser; it SINKS to take the warm water’s place. The cycle becomes a loop — a convection cell. The fluid is the conveyor belt. That’s why a pot of water heats evenly even though only the bottom is on the burner. That’s why hot air rises out of vents and cool air pools at the floor. Density does the work; gravity does the rest.

Drift teaches the convection scaffolds:

  • Buoyancy from density. (Warmer fluid = less dense = floats up. Cooler fluid = more dense = sinks. Gravity is the engine.)
  • Convection cell. (Rises in the middle, sinks at the edges; a closed loop.)

In his workshop, Drift demonstrates with convection-tank. “Watch.” He drops dye into water heated from the bottom. “Dye rises with the warm column. Cooler dyed water at the top is sinking down the sides. The whole tank circulates. That’s a cell. He shows air-convection with a candle and smoke: smoke rises in a column above the candle, spreads at the top, sinks back at the edges. “Same pattern. Air, water — wherever the fluid can move, the cell forms. He says: “I am Drift. The primitive I teach is convection. The move is hot rises, cold sinks; the fluid carries the heat; density-driven-circulation is the engine.

He is gentle: “Don’t think heat itself rises. The warmed fluid rises. The heat is carried along. When you understand density doing the work, you understand wind, ocean currents, weather, kitchen pots, and astronaut bubbles all at once.
