About MapForge Play

How it works

MapForge turns geography into things you figure out — not just facts to memorize. A world only makes sense when its rain, rivers, and biomes all obey the same rules as the real Earth.

  • Layered-Map Builderpredict before you see the answer: which side of a mountain range becomes a dry rain-shadow desert, which cell a river flows into next (downhill, never up), and what landform two moving tectonic plates build. Predicting first is how real geographers reason about a landscape.
  • Biome / Climate Match — read a climate's temperature and rainfall and work out which biome it grows, from tropical rainforest to tundra. Temperature and rain together decide the biome — that's why you can't put a rainforest in a desert.
  • Projection Lab — see why a flat Mercator map stretches places near the poles, so Greenland looks bigger than South America even though it's eight times smaller. Every flat map of a round world has to distort something.
  • Concept kits — 16 short question rounds, from tectonic plates and mountains through climate, biomes, settlement, trade routes, and map-reading skills.

What's different from the app

The full app lets you paint a whole planet freely and watch its systems come alive. The web version focuses on the reasoning underneath that — the rules a plausible world has to follow — as short predict-then-check challenges. The rules are the real lesson; the open sandbox was the stage.

Bearing, Inset, Key, Plot, and Wayfind each stand for one idea in reading and making maps — which way is north, how scale trades detail for the big picture, what a legend leaves out, how coordinates pin down a place, and the many ways different cultures have mapped their world. MapForge Play is free, works offline, and collects nothing. No accounts, no ads, no tracking, and no data ever leaves your device — your level and streak are saved only in this browser.

Mistakes are part of it

A wrong prediction is data, never failure. Guessing which slope is desert and finding out you were flipped is exactly how the rule sticks — that's how real geographers learn a landscape too.
