About LinguaQuest Play
How it works
LinguaQuest turns curiosity about the world's languages into things you do — not just facts to memorize.
- Phrase Quest — you land in a real place around the world and have to read the moment: greet a merchant in Tokyo, thank a baker in Berlin, say the greeting of peace in Amman. Pick the authentic phrase that fits, then see and hear what it means. Every phrase is a real, respectful word in its language.
- Cognate Detective — a word from another language looks like an English one. Is it a true cognate (really related, like Spanish familia ↔ family) or a false friend (German Gift looks like “gift” but means poison)? Commit your guess first — noticing that a resemblance might fool you is the real skill — then uncover the truth.
- Language Family — the world's 7,000+ languages fall into big families, like branches of one huge tree. Place a language under its family — is Finnish really not related to its neighbors? is Mandarin related to Japanese? — then see where it sits in the tree and meet one of its relatives.
- Concept kits — 16 short question rounds, from language families and writing systems, through grammar and translation, to endangered languages and how words travel between languages.
What's not here (and why)
The iPad app is a top-down adventure world you walk through, and it can listen to you speak and show your pronunciation. A browser can't listen on every device the same way, and the big walking-around world needs a game engine — so the web version keeps the heart of it: reading a real situation and choosing what to say, and understanding how languages connect. Reading and choosing the right phrase is the real lesson; the walking-around map was the stage. If your browser supports it, a “hear it” button reads a phrase aloud — but it's optional and never required.
Respect for every language
Every greeting, phrase, and word here is accurate and used the way real speakers use it — never a stereotype or a joke at a language's expense. False friends aren't a language being “tricky”; they're a fascinating, natural result of languages sharing ancient roots. Languages carry the stories of the people who speak them, and they deserve care.

Picking the wrong phrase or getting fooled by a false friend is data, never failure. It just tells you what to notice next time — that's exactly how people learn a new language.
